In 2002 we were faced with the loss of our library and Friends of Somersham Library was formed to oppose the closure. We were determined to keep our library and if that meant funding it and running it ourselves we would do just that. And so we did, and the County Council and Parish Councils have supported us in our enterprise.

We have created our own volunteer run and managed, Community Information Centre in Somersham. We have been open now for over 6 years.

What’s available?      A full and free library service – we work in partnership with Cambridgeshire Library Service, which means that if you have a Cambs library membership card, you can use it at our library. If you join at our library (no charge), you will receive a Cambs library membership card which you can use at any Cambs library.  We have several thousand good quality fiction and non-fiction books. Some have been bought by us and others donated by Somersham residents.

In addition to the books available in Somersham library, as a Cambs library member you also have access to all of the books within the Cambs library service. Books can be reserved free of charge and collected from our library.

Spare time on your hands?

Our library has been run as a local voluntary library for over six years and our success was acknowledged in 2007, when we were presented with The Queens Award for Voluntary Service. Behind the scenes volunteers help with fund raising, book covering, gardening, cleaning, and book buying, building maintenance, finance, displays, business advice, record keeping and sorting the hundreds of donations we receive, as well as manning the library during opening hours.

We need a variety of skills and experience and all volunteers are welcome.  If you are interested come into the library and talk to the volunteers, who will give you more information.  Alternatively you could contact our volunteer co-ordinator, Liz Sutton, on telephone number 840150.

You will find us in Church Street, Somersham, at the heart of your community.  If you decide to become a ‘Friend of Somersham Library’, or ‘FOSL’, at £5 per household per year, you will help us keep this thriving hidden treasure alive.
